The Future of Cord Cutting

Imagine if you could use Apps like Netflix, Crave, DAZN, TSN and Prime Video to replace your regular TV Programming.

I have already done the math and

yes I want to cut the Cord!

Get Internet

The next evolution of television entertainment.

The landscape of digital entertainment is changing, when Netflix took out Blockbuster, many did not see that coming. In hindsight it made sense; it was more convenient and cheaper. The next wave is going to have the same effect, with streaming services such as Disney+ and Apple TV+ launching in Canada they will begin to compete with apps like Netflix, Crave and Prime Video, it’s just a matter of time before apps are the best way to go. All major networks and sports leagues have apps that you can stream live. The way that most ISPs are set up today using traffic shaping or bandwidth throttling is creating a direct interference with the enjoyment of the app-based TV services.

What is Traffic Shaping and Bandwidth Throttling, you ask?

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:

Traffic shaping is a bandwidth management technique used on computer networks that delays some or all datagrams to bring them into compliance with the desired traffic profile.[1][2] Traffic shaping is used to optimize or guarantee performance, improve latency, or increase usable bandwidth for some kinds of packets by delaying other kinds.

Bandwidth throttling is the intentional slowing or speeding of Internet service by an Internet service provider (ISP). It is a reactive measure employed in communication networks to regulate network traffic and minimize bandwidth congestion. Bandwidth throttling can occur at different locations on the network. On a local area network (LAN), a system administrator (“sysadmin”) may employ bandwidth throttling to help limit network congestion and server crashes. On a broader level, the Internet service provider may use bandwidth throttling to help reduce a user’s usage of bandwidth that is supplied to the local network. Bandwidth throttling is also used to speed up the Internet on speed test websites.

Do these tools sound fair?

Well believe it or not these two processes are constantly being used in the ISP industry to benefit the company’s profit margin, not the consumers. What this means is that ISPs set the parameters for your Internet, they have complete control of the quality of your Internet and how it streams. If they want to limit your streaming bandwidth while watching Netflix then they will throttle it back. The same thing happens with watching an android box or other video-streaming devices.

Decide to cut the cord?

You ask the question: How come my Internet sucks but my provider’s internet-based TV service is working fine? A perfect example is Bell Fibe TV. Bell will prioritize its own internet-based TV with an allocated amount of your bandwidth causing your other streaming devices to suffer.

If you are thinking of “cutting the cord” then you must find an ISP that does not traffic shape or bandwidth throttle, most ISP’s practice throttling so be sure to seek out a company offering pure internet which provides higher speeds and less buffering.

The new term in the Internet world will be “PURE INTERNET” and it will refer to ISPs that can legitimately offer no traffic shaping or no bandwidth throttling.

We also like to keep our customers educated, the biggest lesson we have taught to date is that internet speed isn’t defined as the package that you subscribe to. If you have a 60Mbps plan, that’s not telling you how fast your internet is, it defines the amount of internet usage you can use at one time.  Think of it as a highway, that 60Mbps represents the size of a highway, not the speed of the cars on it. If you widen your highway then you can have more cars going fast on it. Increasing your bandwidth won’t make your internet buffer less when you have an ISP that is traffic shaping or bandwidth throttling. It’s the quality of your internet that makes you buffer less.

We have only seen one company offering “Pure Internet” so far, Apsis Communications Inc. If you are lucky enough to have us available in your service area then we definitely suggest giving us a try! Cord-cutting is the way of the future, why not start saving money today?
